Reflective Essay
Debunking is a concept that breaks down sterotypes and proves them to be true or false or ” Looking at both obvious and surface-level and the less obvious and deeper explanations for social behaviour”(Dr.CQA, pg 6, lecture notes). It can stop ignorance and help people become aware of things that are said to be true but possibly are not. It lets people grow and evolve into better more moral humans. When your mind is filled with such sterotypes such as, all asian kids are smart or all indians are cab drivers it creates chaos and anguish in people and in society, it creates ignorance and hate. Debunking puts a stop to all the pain and anguish these sterotypes cause, it brings realife and and a stoppage of hate between people and possibly between countries.
In Dr.CQA’s Sociology 1125, I have learned many new helpful tools, terms and most importantly understandings, this class has given me a new insight on life, a alternate reality if you may, it has given me the power to be less ignorant and see the whole picture. I was a lot more ignorant and less accepting and in all honesty a person who thought in sterotypes(eg of sterotypes: All black people are fast and White people cant jump). This class has shown me waht society is and how it works and it has taught me to be a better person, debunking has given me the power to do things on my own, to help me understand others and other ethnicities and cultures and put a stop to sterotyping to my self and the people around me.
One of the most important things that debunking has taught me is that sterotyping is hurtful and not true at all. The way i thought, the way i used to see people was not only affecting the way i thought but it affected the way i lived and the way i talked to people(eg. Asking asian friends for help off the top of my head because i thought hey hes asian he must know how to solve this). I let sterotyping control the way i saw the world but i can see clearly now, i can see the familiar in the unfamiliar and the unfamiliar in the familiar. One very important example that really showed me debunking was Emile Darkheims suicide findings about how people said only people with psychological problems killed themselves when infact the most important factor was social solidarity.
This class has forever changed the way i see the world, it makes me feel like a better person by far, it makes me have great pride to be a human who is able to see exactly what most people dont see which is seeing the familiar in the unfamiliar. This class has given me the power to show other people that sterotypes are wrong, it has given me the power to help people see the right way or atleast a better way of thinking.

The Phantom of the Races,The Myth of race and the Realiy of Racism.

The Phantom of the Races,The Myth of race and the Realiy of Racism.
What question did this text/chapter raise?
How much power and fear and how strong just a race and racism can influence the ignorant humans to be so evil.
How did the text/chapter answer this question?
It answers this question when Dr.CQA essentially states that race is simply just phystical characterstics such as skin tone and hair and how it can lead to sterotyping.
How does the answer match our own ideas and experiences?
This matches my experience , liek after 9-11 even though we as canadians were not directly involved in this tragedy , i was being sterotyped by peers as a terrorist, sure some ay have been joking but after a while, you soon forget and it feels more real than a joke.

” Where is the “coalition of the willing” to liberate liberia? THe Bush government contends that LIberia’s liberation can be carred out by Liberans and Africans themselves, but iraquis cannot liberate themselves”
How does the answer match our own ideas and experiences?
It matches my ideas due to the fact i thought the samething that it makes me feel and think that they are only doing this for the oil, thats why they wont help liberia.

September 11

September 11, Forgivness is not part of the lessons learned

What question did this text/chapter raise?
“The lives of non-Westerners are less precious than those of Westerners.”
How did the text/chapter answer this question?
“They build memorials and monuments for their victims, but ridicule and trivialize a slavery memorial.”
How does the answer match our own ideas and experiences?
This stood out and really hit me in my heart, so i really wanna talk about it, it really shows how ignorant people can be, i mean i cant even begin to pick the proper words to explain how i feel about this, in my expierences it hasnt been anything in comparasion to as big as a slavery memorial, but it is something, as having a idea to do something in a group of friends and being told its terrible but when one of the more popular friends says it its a good idea.

Negotiation, Not Retribution

Negotiation, Not Retribution
What question did this text/chapter raise?
” West should not be oblivous to the ever-widening chasam between the rich and poor nations, between the “haves” and “have nots” in their own backyard”
How did the text/chapter answer this question?
“What history teaches, to paraphrase the german philosopher gerorg Hegel, is that men do not learn from history.Hegel was right.Otherwise the bush administration would have resorted to negotiations even with the devils who commited the heinous crime on september 11, not retribution”
How does the answer match our own ideas and experiences?
It matches my own idea because there are times where one makes mistakes and makes it again and again ,knowing well enough about what they are doing, even knowing that in the past it has bad, they continue.

Issues In Social Justice: Discrimination faced by members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender(LGBT) communit

Issues In Social Justice: Discrimination faced by members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender(LGBT) community, By Carrie Buist and Andrew Verheek
Essentially what this reading talks about is how societies expectations on gender and sexuality and persons identity can come into play on discimmination and how we can learn to understand them by putting ourselves in their shoes. It talks about the many discrimmination this community has overcome but most importantly it talks about hate crimes and how horrific they can be.
five-sentance segment: ” It is important to note that offical statistice for hate crimes against members of the LGBT community are difficult to ascertain, mainly because of the lack of self reporting to law enforcement officals. One of the main sources for acquiring offical statistics regarding hate crimes in the U.S is the FBI’s, Unifor Crime Reports.”
i selected this segment to paraphrase because it shows how ignorant people are to others pain, it shows how people dont care and go as far as to not report crime, it show how difficult it is to be apart of such a community that goes through so much hardship and how they deserbe to be treated just like the rest of us , they are also human beings.
